Picking Your GPS Course

UCCS offers a variety of GPS courses for every major, field of study, or student interest. As a first-year student this may feel overwhelming for you -- how do I select a GPS course? Below, is a step-by-step guide to assist you in selecting a GPS course that best fits your student schedule, your interests, and your preferred mode of instruction.

GPS offers more than 75 unique seminar courses designed to assist first-year students with their transition to college. GPS courses are offered Monday - Friday and include a variety of date and time options, in an effort to meet any student schedule.

When selecting a GPS course, you will want to begin first by looking at your student schedule. Because GPS courses are designed to be taken in conjunction with your other first-year courses, you will want to ensure that your schedule prioritizes your academic schedule as well as any other scheduling needs, such as work, college athletics or study time.

You can select from a GPS course that meets weekly on Monday or Thursday; you can select from a GPS course that meets at 8 am or 4:45 pm; you can select a GPS course that begins mid-semester (Session B) if you enroll late or have scheduling conflicts; or you an select a GPS course that meets 100 percent online or meets as a Pre-Term (1 week intensive) before the start of the semester.

Regardless of the course you select and the meeting date or course time, you want to first consider your overall student schedule and then select a GPS course that fits into that--affording you the flexibility and time to ensure your student success.

GPS courses are divided into two categories: Discipline Specific -- courses that introduce students to a major (e.g. Creative Writing or Nursing ) or field of study (e.g. Healthcare or Engineering) or Themed -- courses that introduce students to exploring UCCS.

Regardless of what your interest is -- future major or career profession -- all GPS courses use the same common core curriculum to better provide students with engagement in shared learning experiences to help them better succeed while at UCCS and beyond.

All GPS courses will focus on engaging students in high-impact practices that help them with topics such as time-management, grit and resiliency, career exploration, and so much more. Discipline specific courses will simply engage with this from the lens of the selected major or field of study, i.e. Nursing--students in these courses will explore what it time-management or grit will look like in this respective field. For themed courses, students will explore this from the lens of a first-year student--what this looks like at college and in their future career.

You can rest assured that regardless of taking a discipline specific or themed class, you will engage in a course designed to help you better succeed. So select a GPS course that aligns with your future career or major or select a GPS course that has an amazing theme, like "Muggle Studies" or "Off and Running."

Selecting a GPS course that fits your schedule and your interests is a priority; however, you will also want to consider the learning platform that best suits not only your schedule but also your preferred method of class engagement.

GPS courses are offered as either in-person or online -- designed to provide students with flexible engagement options that best suit their needs. Requirements for students enrolled in these two categories may look different -- visiting the UCCS MOSAIC Center -- but are still required, regardless of enrolled in an in-person or online course.

Consider the type of experience and engagement you prefer, in-person or online and look for available GPS courses that match that interest. Remember, all GPS courses, regardless of modality share a similar common core curricular structure.
